Make your own mains transformer! This do-it-yourself transformer kit has a ready-wound 120 – 240V primary winding on one one half of a split bobbin, E and I laminations, end frames and clamping bolts, and solder tags. Secondary windings can be wound onto the free half of the bobbin using enamelled copper wire for a total output not exceeding 100VA (100 Watts). To find the number of secondary turns required, multiply the output voltage required by 4.16 turns per volt, +1% for each multiple of 10VA of loading. E.g. +10% if the full 100VA will be used. (This is what is meant by 'regulation' as so many percent.) Wire for winding the secondaries is not included in the kit.

Hint Normally the orientation of the 'E' and 'I' laminations are reversed at each level, so that there is an equal number of 'E's and 'I's on each side. However if all the 'E's are placed on one side and the 'I's on the other, and a thin strip of paper inserted between to separate the two groups, a DC choke may be made, the paper forming an 'air gap'.

Note that for best results you should really aim to try to fill the former with wire, a requirement which will also have a bearing on the thickness of wire used.
